I admit I don’t have much of a green thumb, but if my cayenne chilies are anything to go by then I’m not doing too bad 🙂

Which is why it was great to see so many exhibitions teaching people the best techniques to grow their garden, whether for aesthetics or for production, and all within the Carlton Gardens and the Melbourne Exhibition Building for the 2015 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show.

Knowing that I will be doing a ton of macro photography, I contemplated to bring either the D600 with the 24-70mm f2.8 Nikkor lens, which was going to get heavier as the day progresses, or just bring my little Fuji X100S, which is not exactly a camera known for its macro capabilities. Thinking that if things don’t go to plan I can still do some street photography later, I decided on the Fuji.

And it was the right choice.

The versatility of this camera is astounding. Sure, the autofocus hunted a bit whilst doing some macro shots, but switch it to manual focus with focus peaking and I managed to get some decent macro shots.

Granted that it is a 35mm, but the manual focus allowed me to get really close to the subject, and the results are below. I was extremely pleased with the results, and although all of the shots below used the RAW files and post processing, the JPEG would’ve been just fine as well.
